BDMCC General Meeting Minutes

June 2009

The June meeting started out at 7:32 p.m.

First off the Secretary’s report was read and accepted as such.

The Treasurer’s report was also accepted as read.

Next on to communications were available from the UW-extension for those on hand to check out.

Island updates were the only topic of old business.  Art announced he had the prairie seed and matting needed for Cole’s Island.  There was nothing coming up on the island yet.  Usually the natural vegetation is aloud to grow to 6-8 inches in which it is then treated to kill it off, allow that to sit for 2 weeks, and then seed is planted and raked in.  Fencing is the final touch needed to complete the start of the vegetation.

The board of directors decided it is the right time to put up the thank you/welcome sign.  We are hoping this will enhance donations.  The sign will be made of a poly laminate for durability and it will be easy to replace pieces and not the whole thing when repairs are needed.  It is still up for discussion as to whom and how a person or business will get a spot on the sign.  We will install it ourselves and not cement it down for possible movement after the property purchase goes through.

The boat is set with new batteries and gas tanks and is working great.  Now the task is to get the cane bed signs in.  Art and his DNR department have a few extra dollars so he is going to invest in a few new cane bed signs.

The Poker run is almost set to go this weekend.  The final touches will be added to the booklet and what type of advertising is being finalized.  Also the liquor license is set for the September event.

David Horst from the Post Crescent was at the property and is going to write an article to help raise awareness of the club.

The club did not receive the Fish and Wildlife grant.  The club was just notified that the appraisal from the property for the other grant application may not be DNR certified.  The details are unclear, but as soon as more comes to light it will be remedied.  Also if the club can get $15,000 committed in the next month for the property it will give us and extra point for the grant.

The only new business was that the cane bed signs needed to be put out once the weather cooperates.

Nicole noted that the updated brochures about the club are at the printer and will be done in the next few weeks. Art chimed in to say island number seven had 16 pairs of terns this year which is up from last years 11 pairs.  More rock will be added to the island at the end of the year.  Over 1100 pelican nests were counted in the break wall.  The water clarity is decreasing most likely from the amount of pelicans but he will sample the water and go from there.  Also there were egrets out at the property and that the gulls are not nesting on the islands, but are on the break wall.

This brought the meeting to an end at 8:20p.m first by Pat and seconded by Don.
